Laser Hair Removal Facts

The technology behind laser hair removal is straight forward. Laser hair removal is a technique that uses beams of highly concentrated light to penetrate the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles and destroys the hair within the follicle thus inhibiting future hair growth. It typically takes 6 to 8 treatments to remove unwanted hair.

The equipment used is of the utmost importance and can be the difference between a smooth hair removal experience and a not so smooth experience. Vasu Skin Solutions uses the Quanta Light Series 755nm Alexandrite and 1064 Nd:YAG lasers which have both been clinically proven to provide results superior to other technologies for laser hair removal and are approved by the FDA for the permanent reduction of hair growth. The FDA defines permanent hair reduction as, “a significant reduction in the number of terminal hairs after a given treatment.” The 755nm Alexandrite is the Gold Standard for laser hair removal!

We strive to make laser hair removal a comfortable experience at Vasu Skin Solutions through the use of our Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling device which minimizes pain and thermal injury during laser treatments.

Unlike shaving or waxing, our Quanta laser can treat coarse, dark hair while leaving the surrounding skin untouched. Although there might be some sensitivity in the area, only the hair follicle is affected by the laser. Shaving creates razor burn and leaves unsightly red bumps. It can also cause ingrown hairs, not something you want in your armpit or bikini area. Waxing leaves the skin red, irritated and sensitive. Laser hair removal gives you optimal results leaving you silky and smooth.

The laser used can treat many follicles in a fraction of a second with each pulse. Each second, the laser can target an area of skin that is roughly the size of a quarter. In some cases, small areas, like the upper lip, can be treated in just a few minutes. Larger areas, such as the back, may take 20 minutes to treat.

Laser hair removal works best on dark, thick and coarse hair. It is not effective on blond, grey, red or light brown hair. Do not tan, spray tan or use tanning beds during your treatment. What is the difference between a laser and an IPL device?

An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device is not a laser. At Vasu Skin Solutions, we use the 755nm Alexandrite which is considered by many in the field of laser hair removal to be the gold standard.

Is every laser the same?

No, many spas call their IPL device a laser. The 755nm Alexandrite is the gold standard for permanent hair reduction for Skin Types I-III while the 1064nm Nd:YAG is best for Skin Types IV and darker. The 1064nm Nd:YAG is the only laser that should be used on darker skin types. Vasu Skin Solutions offers clients the 755nm Alexandrite as well as the 1064nm Nd:YAG.

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

The laser beam is attracted to the melanin in your hair follicle and disables the follicle from producing hair; therefore laser hair removal works best on light skin and course, dark hair. Sun exposure, tan skin, spray tans, self tanning lotions and clients on antibiotics are contraindications for laser hair removal.

Is it painful?

A laser treatment may feel like a prickly or stinging sensation and is much more tolerable than waxing. Our Zimmer cooling device adds comfort by blowing cold air on the area to be treated.

How do I prepare for my first visit?

Please arrive to your appointment with the area to be treated clean with 2-3 days of hair growth. Do not wax, tweeze, pluck or bleach the area to be treated 4 weeks prior to your first appointment. Do not arrive with a sun tan, spray tan or use self tanning or sparkly lotions. Do not use Retin-A or benzoyl peroxide for two weeks before your appointment. Please shower and do not arrive for a Brazilian after yoga or any other form of exercise as our technicians greatly appreciate clean genitals!

What can I expect after my visit?

The treated area may be mildly red and swollen around the follicle. It may feel like a mild sunburn. These reactions typically subside within a couple of hours. Not having any reaction is also normal.

Do I leave my appointment hair free?

No, it may take 7 to 21 days for the hair to release from the follicle. You may shave in between appointments.

Is laser hair removal for men?

YES of course, many men are discovering permanent hair reduction for their neck, back, chest, arms, legs and the unwanted nose or ear hair.

Should I tip?

Tipping is certainly not necessary but our laser technicians appreciate it when you do!
